It’s the clash of the table toppers, with Brisbane Heat taking on Sydney Sixers. The last 5 matches between these teams make for an interesting read, with the Heat taking three wins and the Sixers none, and two of the matches didn’t produce any result. It’s a bit bizarre because the Sixers dominate the overall head-to-head record with 13 wins to the Heat’s 6.
The Heat almost went through the round stages without dropping a game, losing to Perth Scorchers in their final game which also happened to be the reverse fixture. The Sixers leapt over the Scorchers to finish at top 2 with an astounding chase of 198 runs against all odds at the furnace. Brisbane Heat will go into this match as the less favourite side given their poor performances at this venue and especially against this opposition.
After a scintillating chase the other day, the Sixers will now believe they can knock over the Heat, who they’ve defeated twice at the Carrara Oval already.

Topping the league table was a stroll in the park for Brisbane Heat, and they were on the verge of creating history- getting through to qualifiers without any loss. But the Perth Scorchers denied them by winning the reverse fixture last weekend.
Their batting looks a little depleted for this crucial fixture with Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne away on national duty and overseas players Colin Munro and Sam Billings departing to partake in the ILT20. Jimmy Peirson showed he can step up with a valuable contribution against the Scorchers, but the Kiwi is too big a hole to fill right at the top. Matt Renshaw is flying in from Adelaide, after being released from the test squad for this particular contest.
Him and Nathan McSweeney need to come up with a big performance for the Heat to take advantage of the powerplay. Their middle order and lower order is performing really well, with Michael Neser, Paul Walter and Max Bryant amongst the runs. As for bowling, the Heat attack has a lot of variety in it, with swing bowler Michael Neser, left-armer Spencer Johnson, right arm seamer Xavier Bartlett, Matthew Kuhnemann the left arm offie and Mitchell Swepson the right arm leggie. Their potent bowling attack has never conceded more than 170 runs this term.

The Sixers are a class T20 outfit with fine pedigree, but they’ve a few things to worry about. The Sixers haven’t beaten the Heat in their last 5 outings, including their recent meeting in a rain marred game at Coffs Harbour this season and the Challenger at the SCG which ended their hopes of winning another title.
Besides, they will have to do without James Vince, who is a part of a long list of players who’ll miss the BBL knockouts to take part in the ILT20. Kurtis Patterson will slot into the XI to take Vince’s place as opener and will pair up with Daniel Hughes, who has been a gun batsman for Sixers for a long time. The in-form left hander fancies playing at this venue and will be hoping to reprise his performance come Friday.
Josh Philippe is still searching for form but thankfully captain Moises Henriques finally got to get the monkey off his back just in time for the knockouts-- with a splendid finish to take the Sixers home. Jordan Silk is another key batter the Sixers will count on. There is not much batting to come much later, so the onus is on the top and middle order to lay a platform, build an innings and finish it with a flourish. They’re going to need all the extra runs they can find, because their bowling is not as good as the Heat at the moment.
Todd Murphy, Ben Dwarshuis and Jackson Bird are doing a good job, but they need other bowlers to assist them. Sean Abbott is far from menacing, Hayden Kerr is still a bit rusty, and Jack Edwards doesn’t look good at all to bowl four overs. Regardless, the Sydney Sixers possess a champion mindset that allows them to overcome all challenges with whatever resources they have on hand.

The pitch at the Carrara oval has developed a bit of reputation as one of the good sporting wickets in the country, where there is a good contest between the bat and ball. Forecast suggests that we could be in for a cloudy and humid evening and that there is an odd chance of a thunderstorm during the match.
The Carrara Oval located in the beautiful suburb of Carrara, Gold Coast will host the first qualifier. Sydney Sixers have been quite successful in this ground, winning 5 games and losing one. Brisbane Heat’s record pales in comparison, with just 2 wins in 8 matches.
Teams that have done well at this venue usually elect to field first. Sydney Sixers have won 4 tosses here and have always chose to put the opposition in to bat. Brisbane Heat wouldn’t want to argue on that tactic, having chosen chasing each of the four times they won toss here.
The Sixers know how to win big moments when their backs are against the wall, and they demonstrated that quality in their last league match against the Scorchers. They may be a bit depleted at the moment but know what they need to do to upstage the strongest Brisbane Heat side they’ve faced in the recent years.
Our prediction is for Sydney Sixers to win this contest.
