Dubai Capitals take on Desert Vipers in what appears to be a must-win clash for both teams. Two back to back losses have rattled the Vipers a bit, pushing them down to the bottom on the points table. One win in four matches doesn’t really help the Vipers chances of qualifying one bit, and they’re going to have to find a way to turn their campaign around.
The Capitals are not doing great either, having lost three out of five matches, the last of which was a proper hammering from the Sharjah Warriors. Another loss could seriously hurt their chances of getting through, so they’ll do well to avoid a hat trick loss in this contest. Last season, the Vipers won both the matches against the Capitals at Dubai. And, they’ll be hoping to repeat that feat this season.

David Warner’s ILT20 this season has yet to take off. Billed as a star player of the league, Warner has had an extremely lean tournament scoring 58 runs off 5 innings at less than 80 strike rate with 21 his best. Also struggling with the bat is hard-hitting Caribbean player Rovman Powell, who has an aggregate of 30 runs in 5 innings.
Compounding Capitals’ struggles with the bat are Rahmanullah Gurbaz ‘s inconsistency up top and dashing one-down batsman Jake Fraser McGurk’s return to Australia following a call up to the national side. The two other batsmen to have scored over 100 runs for the Capitals this season , Sikandar Raza and Sam Billings find themselves doing the bulk of the scoring, and luckily for the Capitals they’ve been up to the task. Ben Dunk, replacing Jake Fraser McGurk, hasn’t made any impact, and looks a spent force at number 3.
Bowling-wise, the Capitals looked good in patches. Dushmantha Chameera has been the go-to bowler for Warner, and he has 7 wickets in 5 matches so far. Sikandar Raza has contributed significantly with the ball in hand, too, with 5 wickets in 5 matches at an excellent economy rate of 5.43. Roelof Van Der Merwe has been going ok, but tends to leak runs at times. The Capitals need their medium fast bowlers Jason Holder and Akif Raja to chip in with wickets or hold an end up with some tight bowling.

Three losses in four matches highlight a rough season for the Vipers so far, and, no surprise, they bring up the rear on the points table. Their first loss came against the Knight Riders, when the Vipers batsmen scratched around to finish with a below-par total, giving the bowling unit hardly anything to defend.
An encounter against current champs the Gulf Giants followed next, but they had their plans in place and adapted well with the bat and ball to pick up a crucial win. But they couldn’t add another win to their tally, as they went down to the Knight Riders who had no difficulty chasing a below-par total against the Vipers for the second time in few days. The Vipers lost their next encounter against the Sharjah Warriors by just 7 runs, having been in the hunt for most part of the chase. 16 runs off the last over proved to be a little too many in the end, as the Warriors bowler Jawadaullah Khan exhibited good death-bowling skills to defend it.
Most batsmen in the Vipers’ shed are in decent touch but they haven’t been able to convert their starts to something substantial. Adam Hose is amongst the runs, but he would like them at a faster clip though. On the bowling front, spinner Hasaranga and pacer Shaheen Afridi are leading from the front. Luke Wood made an impressive debut this season, picking up 3 wickets for 33 runs from his four overs. He’s expected to start in the coming matches as well.
Rohan Mustafa, Adam Hose, Colin Munro (c), Azam Khan (wk), Sherfane Rutherford, Ali Naseer, Wanindu Hasaranga, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Mohammed Amir, Matheesha Pathirana, Luke Wood.

No threat of rain. We’re going to get a full quota of overs in for this fixture, and it should be an exciting contest. Both teams have their fair share of batting woes so this clash may not turn out to be a run fest no matter how well the pitch plays.

Average TurnThis match will be played at the Dubai International Stadium. The Capitals have lost both the fixtures against the Vipers here and so they will be hoping to make amends for last season.
A clear pattern—no prizes for guessing— has emerged this season. Win toss, chose to bat second, and restrict the opposition to a total just par or below par. There’s a great chance that the team winning the toss will elect to field first.
Our money is on the Capitals. They’re struggling to find their feet back after Jane Fraser McGurk left them and some of their batsmen are awfully out of touch. But, with the qualification on the line, we guess they’ll turn up for the clash motivated and hand Vipers another defeat.
