It is still early days in the 2025 T20 Blast but Northants have certainly caught the eye with their results and performances in their first two games.
Looking at Derbyshire's form from the end of last season and into the start of this - three defeats and only one win from the last four T20 matches - some might expect Northants to be onto another winner in this game but it is likely to be much closer than some of those pundits might suggest.
The teams met at a similar time of year in 2024 with Derbyshire winning in Derby by 24 runs (DLS) when chasing a target of 100 from 11 overs thanks to a brilliant 68 runs from 26 balls from opener Aneurin Donald.
It was the pace trio of Daryn Dupavillon, Zak Chappell and Pat Brown who starred in that match but only the latter two are still in the side and both went wicketless in the defeat at Leicestershire.
Wednesday's fixture looks like being a close one with repurcussions at both ends of the table!

Although they eventually posted a competitive 170/6 against Leicestershire, Derbyshire found themselves 6/1, 6/2, 11/3, 35/4 and 51/5 so it is clear that they need stronger and longer contributions from their top order in this clash against Northants.
Keeper-batter Aneurin Donald starred in this fixture last season but comes into this match after making a two-ball duck against Leicestershire and he will be crucial for the hosts, alongside Caleb Jewell at the top of the order.
Experienced skipper Samit Patel, Martin Andersson and Ross Whiteley are all capable of valuable middle and lower-order runs but the likes of Wayne Madsen and David Lloyd, batting at three and four, both need to make contributions.
With the ball, AM Ghazanfar is in strong form and although Pat Brown leaked 47 runs from just 2.4 overs on Friday, we still expect him to be a threat in Derby.

Not for the first time in a T20 cricket game, the batting of Ravi Bopara was the difference between the two sides when Northants made it two wins from two so far this season when they beat Leicestershire at home in their last game.
Northants also have skipper David Willey who has been around the block many times and in him and Bopara, they have a pair of all-rounders who can win a match with either bat or ball.
Willey comes into this game after taking 3/20 against Leicestershire but it was his opening bowling partner Ben Sanderson who upstaged him in that match after he returned figures of 4/15.
Expect George Scrimshaw and Bopara to also be threats with the ball in this fixture.

According to the forecast, there will be cloud cover from the start of the game until the end. It will be quite a chilly evening in Derby with the temperature no higher than 13 degrees by the finish.
The pitch in Derby has been quite dry and low this season but due to recent wet weather should have a bit more energy for the quick bowlers to exploit. A par total is likely to be around 175-180.
The conditions look set to favour the fielding side in this match from start to finish so our prediction is that both teams will choose to bowl first if they win the toss.
Derbyshire won this fixture last season but it looks like a tough assignment if they are to repeat the feat this time around. Northants have experience as well as players in excellent form and we expect to see them come out on top in this clash.
We are backing Northants to win!
