A well-constructed century by Smriti Mandhana and a disciplined performance by the Indian spinners secured a convincing win for India in the first ODI against South Africa on Sunday. South Africa will be looking to level the series when the teams meet again on June 19th at the same venue. However, India are looking formidable in their home conditions.

India's batting display in the first ODI against South Africa was a tale of two halves. Choosing to bat first, they got off to a shaky start, losing their top order cheaply and finding themselves at a precarious 99 for 5. However, a record-breaking partnership lower down the order brought them back into the game. Led by a magnificent 117 from Smriti Mandhana, who scored her first ODI century at home, India added a staggering 166 runs after the fall of the fifth wicket- the highest ever in women's ODIs for the team. This late surge propelled them to a formidable total of 265 for 8, which proved too much for South Africa's batters on a challenging surface.
Apart from Mandhana, lower order contributions from Deepti Sharma (37 off 48) and Pooja Vastrakar (31* off 42) proved to be game-changing.
India will also be looking for some runs from captain Harmanpreet Kaur and Jemimah Rodrigues, who looked in fine touch in the previous game.
In the first ODI, India's bowlers delivered a stellar performance. After India's fast bowlers and Deepti Sharma (10-2 in 6 overs) restricted South Africa's top batsmen, Asha Sobhana bagged a brilliant 4 wickets for just 21 runs on her ODI debut, effectively ending their chase.
We expect Deepti to have another good game here, where she is likely to be economical and among the wickets.

South Africa Women need to do a lot of thinking before the second ODI. Their batters couldn’t adapt to the conditions at all and did not look comfortable against India’s spinners. They hardly have any time to adjust their techniques and have their tasks cut out.
In the previous game, only Sune Luus (33 off 58 balls) showed some fight, while the others around her kept perishing.
The likes of Laura Wolvaardt, Tazmin Brits, and Marizanne Kapp are experienced and the team will be banking on some runs from them.
Wolvaardt averages 66 in her last 10 matches and can have a big game here.
On the bowling side of things, Annerie Dercksen, Masabata Klaas, and Ayobhanga Khaka impressed in the previous match. They bowled stump-to-stump and managed to pick up wickets at important intervals. Khaka now has 11 wickets in her last 8 matches at an economy of 4.46.
South Africa do seem to be missing a quality spinner in their ranks to take advantage of these conditions. Nondumiso Shangase and Nonkululeko Mlaba will need to do a lot better if they hope to put pressure on the Indian batting unit.

The pitch at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium is a terrific one for 50-over cricket. It’s good for batting overall, but it offers something to the bowlers throughout. Seam bowlers will get a good amount of bounce with the new ball, but will need to bowl tight lines as the game progresses. Spinners will have a big role to play in the middle overs. The ball turns and grips more under lights, so the team chasing will have to be careful to negate that threat.
A thunderstorm in spots is expected in the afternoon in Bengaluru on Wednesday. The game might hence be disrupted.

Average TurnThe average score batting first in women’s ODIs at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium is just 172. However, we reckon the team batting first will be looking to target a score of around 250 runs in this game to feel safe.
The last match showed that batting first is the way to go in this weather at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium. Chasing isn’t easy under lights here, so the team winning the toss will be looking to bat first.
India Women have taken a strong start in the ODI series against South Africa Women. South Africa's batting lineup struggled against India's bowling attack, and their bowlers couldn't generate enough pressure. While South Africa remains a formidable opponent, they face a significant challenge adapting to the Indian conditions. Another strong batting performance by India could put immense pressure on the visitors. We anticipate a more competitive second match, but India's familiarity with home turf will likely be a decisive factor. Their spin attack, in particular, could pose a serious threat to South Africa's batters again.
We are backing India Women to win the second game and clinch the series.
