Lions will be taking on Warriors at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg as both teams look for their first win of the CSA Provincial One-Day Challenge Division One 2023.

Warriors will be eager to get some game time as both of their matches so far were washed out due to rain without a ball being bowled. Lions, on the other hand, got off to a poor start being bowled out for 89 runs batting first in their opening game.

In their next match, they lost to Western Province by 10 wickets while defending a very low score. Wiaan Mulder is the only player who looked promising in this side with both bat and ball. 

Warriors will be missing two of their key players. Marco Jansen is part of the Proteas World Cup squad while Nortje was ruled out of World Cup due to injuries.

Lions Preview

Lions are the defending champions who were exceptional last season winning 6 of their 7 league stage matches. They will be disappointed with the start this year and should be looking to turn things around in this game.

Lions will that the only loss they suffered last year was against Warriors. They conceded 348 runs bowling first at St George’s Park and then were bowled out for 298 runs in response.

Sisanda Magala who bagged 2 wickets for 32 runs in their last outing against Dolphins was supposed to be part of the World Cup squad but was ruled out due to injury. He will be a major loss for the Lions as well.

While there are no Magala and Sipamla this season, they still have Duanne Olivier and Bjorn Fortuin along with Wiaan Mulder who’s looked very promising so far. 

Joshua Richards needs to get the Lions off to a good start at the top and the skipper Dominic Hendricks will be in the anchor’s role at number 3.

Ryan Rickelton, another opening batsman, proved his skills and abilities with some consistent performances in their winning campaign in 2022.

Richards and  Rickelton at the top and Mulder and Mitchell Van Buuren in the lower-middle order will be the key batters for the Lions to stage a comeback.

Warriors Preview

Warriors are yet to play a single game this season. After a dismal season last year, they will be hoping for a better start to this season. And what better way than to take on an out-of-form Lions whom the Warriors dominated last season even while the former was in their best form.

Batting all-rounder Diego Rosier will likely continue leading the side and also play a crucial role at number 3. He scored a hundred against Lions along with Tristan Stubbs as the two put on a 259-run stand for the 2nd wicket.

These two will be the key batters in this lineup. There is no Wihaan Lubbe in this squad this season. While Jordan Hermann would still open the innings for Warriors, he may well be ed by Jiveshan Pillay, a left-handed batter from KwaZulu Natal.

There are many promising batters in the middle and lower-middle order. All four wicket-keeper batters hold key positions in the lineup. Matthew Breetzke would come in at number 5 while Sinethemba Qeshile will bat further down the order.

Overall, it is a deep batting lineup and though they’re missing a key all-rounder, they still have some promising players. Beyers Swanepoel will be leading the bowling attack for the Warriors and needs from the likes of Ziyaad Abrahams and Patrick Kruger.
