Somerset are looking to further strengthen their bid for a place in the knockout stages of the 2024 One-Day Cup when they look to add to the two victories picked up this season. Meanwhile, Lancashire have suffered three consecutive defeats and a bigger margin of defeat has left them with the worst Net Run Rate (NRR) figures in Group A. Somerset have an excellent head-to-head record against Lancashire with the team aiming for six consecutive games without a loss against this opponent.
The County Ground in Taunton will be the location for Somerset’s fourth game of the season. Lancashire. Somerset were able to get a seven-wicket victory when these two teams last met each other at the County Ground in Taunton in 2011.

Somerset are looking to overtake Derby, who have a two-point advantage in the table. Somerset are also behind Worcestershire – on NRR – having played a game more. Still, Somerset will be quietly confident after some big wins over Kent and Durham which have witnessed big individual performances.
Despite being bowled out for a duck in the recent win over Durham, Somerset’s opening batsman Andrew Umeed has experienced plenty of success in 2024. He is the top scorer for the team with 198 runs from his three innings – with only Hameed and Budinger ahead on the table. Goldsworthy is a player who has held Somerset in the top three places of Group A.
Jack Leach comes on the back of a six-wicket haul against Durham. This happens to be the first time the 33-year-old has managed five wickets in a single game of this format. Apart from picking wickets, Leach also gave away very little with only 26 conceded in 10 overs. These figures have propelled Leach to 8 wickets for the campaign.

A humiliating performance against Derbyshire was a big blow to Lancashire, who had already suffered two defeats coming into the game.
After being bowled out for just 99, Lancashire saw one of their few strengths from the season disappear. So far, the batting line-up has witnessed some decent performances from the likes of Keaton Jennings and Josh Bohannon. Yet, there was none of the magic against Derbyshire with no player hitting more than 20 runs.
There was a steady fall of wickets throughout the match and Lancashire never really recovered. In response, their bowlers also faltered quite poorly after picking just one wicket in the 20 overs. Lancashire are unlikely to offer much resistance based on their recent performance against Derby.
The performance was so poor that extras even contributed more than a significant chunk of the players. Lancashire have a very poor head-to-head record with four defeats and a tie in the last five meetings against Somerset.

The pitch is expected to show a slight bias towards bowlers. It is not expected to be friendly towards spinners as the pacers are likely to have more advantage on this pitch. The weather in Taunton will be partly cloudy with temperatures reaching a maximum of 24°C. The wind speeds may not be hugely conducive for swing, but pacers will be able to extract more out of the new ball.

The County Ground in Taunton was responsible for hosting four group matches during the 2023 One-Day Cup campaign. From these matches, the average first innings score stood at 283 while the average second innings score was 276. Earlier in the campaign, this venue provided a match with both teams hitting 250+ scores.
There has been a slight preference for teams to go with fielding first on this pitch. The batting and bowling conditions on the pitch can be best described as the average. The team which fielded first (Somerset) won the game at the County Ground a week ago.
Lancashire have come on the back of three consecutive losses into this fixture. Even though there have been few positives for Lancashire in the campaign like a few batsmen hitting centuries, it has largely been a disappointing start. Somerset are likely to build on their powerful results in the last few games to beat Lancashire for a fifth time in the last six meetings.
Our prediction is for Somerset to win
