New Zealand are on tour of Bangladesh for 3 ODIs and 2 Test matches. The longer format series will start in late November. The ODI series is crucial for both teams in their preparation for the World Cup.

And adapting to the sub-continent conditions is key to success for New Zealand. It is also their biggest challenge given there are many players who aren’t as experienced in these conditions.

Will Young, playing in his 20th ODI, opening the innings for NZ showed his potential to adjust to the conditions and the match situation in the opening match of the series.

Bangladesh are a strong side at home and have been exceptional in recent years. Their bowlers pose a tough challenge to any visiting side and NZ need to bounce back strongly to navigate this challenge.

The hosts are coming into this series with their full-strength squad and will start with an advantage in this contest.

Bangladesh Preview

The hosts will be confident coming into this match after they humbled the New Zealand batting lineup in the 1st ODI of the series. Mustafizur Rahman finding his rhythm is great news for Bangladesh ahead of the World Cup.

He was well ed by the left-arm orthodox Nasum Ahmed who bowled 3 maidens in his 8 Overs and bagged 2 wickets for just 21 runs. The skipper will be confident in opting to bowl first if he wins the toss again.

The opposition hasn’t got many experienced players in their batting lineup and Bangladesh will look to capitalize on that and exploit New Zealand’s unfamiliarity with the conditions here.

Moreover, the hosts have a solid batting lineup for this series. Tamim Iqbal and Mahmadullah are making comebacks for Bangladesh and will be key players to watch out for in the batting department.

They’ve also got Litton Das and Soumya Sarkar who can build partnerships and play longer innings. However, after Towhid Hridoy in the middle-order, Bangladesh haven’t got many experienced players who can be the finishers for the team.

As such, one of the middle-order batters must stay on the crease for longer to ensure a big finish for the side.

Bangladesh Predicted Playing XI:

Tamim Iqbal, Litton Das (c), Tanzid Hasan, Soumya Sarkar, Mahmudullah, Towhid Hridoy, Nurul Hasan (wk), Mahedi Hasan, Nasum Ahmed , Tanzim Hasan Sakib, Mustafizur Rahman

New Zealand Preview

New Zealand are here without most of their key players. They are coming from a series loss in England where the batting failed miserably.

And here in Bangladesh, they miss not only their regular captain Kane Williamson but also middle-order bat Daryl Mitchell.

Along with Mitchell, the experienced pacer, Tim Southee also suffered an injury on the England tour and is now out of this squad. Now, they’ve Tom Blundell and Rachin Ravindra at 5 and 6 in the batting lineup.

While Blundell has got experience, he hasn’t played a lot of one-day cricket and is mostly seen in the Test side. Ravindra has shown promise but hasn’t been very consistent in the ODIs.

A lot will depend on Will Young who led a good fight at the top after the visitors lost two early wickets. Henry Nicholls is another key batsman in the middle-order. Chad Bowes and Cole McConchie have also got a chance in this squad and should look to make the most of this opportunity.

Trent Boult and Lockie Ferguson will be the key bowlers in this side while Ish Sodhi is one to watch out for with the spin. Spinners find help in these conditions and as such Rachin Ravindra will also play a key role.

New Zealand Predicted Playing XI:

Finn Allen, Will Young, Henry Nicholls, Chad Bowes, Tom Blundell (wk), Rachin Ravindra, Cole McConchie, Kyle Jamieson, Ish Sodhi, Lockie Ferguson (c), Trent Boult

Weather Conditions

The pitch is a balanced one that offers help for both batters and bowlers. However, spinners have been successful on this pitch in the past and will play a crucial role in this match as well. The weather forecast is for thundershowers with a high of 31 degrees Celsius. Like the previous ODI, this match too will most likely be affected by rain.

BAN vs NZ Pitch Report

Shere Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka will be the venue for the 2nd ODI between Bangladesh and New Zealand. All the 3 ODIs in this series will be played at this same venue. The average 1st innings score in one-day internationals here is 222 runs. For this match, we reckon a 260+ runs score will be a competitive 1st innings total. Both teams have a solid bowling attack to defend such a total.

Toss: To Bowl

Of the 128 ODIs played at this venue so far, teams bowling first have won 67 matches. The 1st ODI of this series also saw the bowlers dominate after Bangladesh opted to bowl first. Both skippers will be keen on bowling first in this match.

It is rare for Bangladesh to start as favorites against a team like New Zealand that has reached the finals of the World Cup in back-to-back editions. But considering the squad strengths of both teams and the hosts’ record at home, it is clear that Bangladesh will have an advantage in this match and the ODI series. Bangladesh will be the favorite in our match prediction.
