Match 34 of the T20 Blast 2025 has Essex Eagles facing Middlesex at Chelmsford on Sunday afternoon. Essex are stuck in a bumpy patch, having dropped all three of their matches and currently sitting at the bottom of the South Group table. Middlesex aren’t in much better shape either, losing both games they’ve completed. Their two points from an abandoned match put them in seventh. With both sides under pressure to turn things around, expect a tightly fought game.

Essex Eagles have been stuck at the bottom of the standings in the South Group after suffering three back-to-back losses, the last of which was a 6-wicket defeat against Glamorgan.
Nothing has worked for them so far, and their batting and bowling departments need to pull up their socks big time.
Michael Pepper has been one of the few positives for them this season. The middle-order batter has accumulated 118 runs in three innings at a strike rate of 157.33 with two fifties.
Barring him, none of the other batters have crossed the 100-run mark this season, although Dean Elgar and Matthew Critchley have chipped in with handy runs.
The bowling has looked listless too, as only Paul Walter has been able to make an impact with four wickets in two innings, but with an economy of over 11. Simon Harmer and Mohammad Amir are good options but they haven’t looked in their best rhythm.

Middlesex need to start getting their act together quickly, or the season might slip away from them before they even realize it. They lost their first two matches, and their last one against Kent was abandoned due to rain. What will worry them is their poor NRR of -1.546, which they need to correct soon.
So far, Ryan Higgins has been their most productive batter with 65 runs in two innings at a terrific strike rate of 232. His quick cameos late down the order have helped the team get to some respectable totals.
Ben Geddes has been good in the middle-order, scoring 58 runs in two innings at a strike rate of 132.
However, the team would expect a lot more from their captain, Stephen Eskinazi, as well as Kane Williamson. Both these batters have loads of experience in these conditions, and it’s only a matter of time before one of them gets a big score. Perhaps this might be the match for it.
Their bowling unit has revolved around Tom Helm, who has collected six wickets in three innings at an economy of 7.82. Zafar Gohar and Luke Hollman have done an excellent ing job, taking seven wickets between them.

Short boundaries and a flat surface make Chelmsford a high-scoring venue, especially in T20s. Batters get value for their shots, and quick outfields add to the run flow. Spinners can struggle unless they vary pace smartly. Seamers who hit the deck and mix lengths can find some reward. Chasing is often preferred here, with dew occasionally playing a role in the second innings. Expect a fast-paced contest.
The forecast shows some early morning showers in Chelmsford, but the evening weather is clear.
The average score batting first at County Ground, Chelmsford is 178. In the first match of the T20 Blast 2025 played here, Essex could manage only 148 after opting to bat first, but Somerset chased that target down in 15.5 overs with 8 wickets in hand. This shows that the team batting first would need at least 170-180 to feel they are in with a chance.
Chasing is usually the preferred option in Chelmsford, and this was proved in the first match of the T20 Blast 2025 played here as Somerset coasted to an 8-wicket win against Essex. So, both captains are likely to field first in this game.
Essex and Middlesex both are in desperate need of a couple of wins to get their campaign back on track. Essex have looked listless in both departments and need a few heroic performances to infuse some energy into the team. Middlesex have underperformed too, but they look a tad better in comparison, especially in the bowling department. Looking at the strengths and weaknesses of both squads, we reckon Middlesex have a better chance in this matchup.
Backing Middlesex as the winners of this match is the smarter choice.
