The One-Day Cup 2024 is in the final matches of the group stages. With just two games remaining, the quarterfinalists are yet to be determined. But the two teams that are 100% out of the knockouts are Northamptonshire Steelbacks and Lancashire Lightning. Both teams will now face each other at County Ground, Northampton on 11th August at 3 pm onwards.
Northamptonshire played their last game against Somerset at the same venue. Batting first, the host lost their wickets on 155 runs. Saif Zaib scored 57 runs in the middle to take Northamptonshire from 33-3 to a respectable target. Somerset chased the target with 7 wickets in hand in the 25th over of the game. Justin Broad (2) and James Sales (1) were the only two bowlers to take the wickets for Northamptonshire.
Lancashire suffered their sixth defeat of the season in their last game against Middlesex at Emirates Old Trafford, Manchester. Rocky Flintoff scored 88 runs in the first innings to set a target of 234 for Middlesex. A 165-run partnership between Joe Cracknell and Sam Robson made the chances of winning null for Lancashire. Jack Morley took three wickets for 45 in his 10 overs quota.
Both teams played against each other in the 2022 season. In a high-scoring game, Northamptonshire set a target of 371 runs for Lancashire after their openers scored centuries. In return, Lancashire’s then-captain Keaton Jennings scored 125 runs. Lancashire chased the target in 49 overs with 4 wickets in hand.
Northamptonshire is currently in the eighth place with two points whereas Lancashire is at the bottom of the points table without a point in 6 games.

The raised hopes of Northamptonshire after a 130-run win over Worcestershire were brought down in the last game where they lost to Somerset by 7 wickets. This will be their chance to end the season on a high note. Prithwi Shaw will open the innings with Ricardo Vasconcelos. Shaw is their leading run-scorer of the season with 303 runs in 6 games with a strike rate of 126.25 - the highest amongst his teammates. He has scored three half-centuries in the last four games. He will be the batter to watch out for. Vasconcelos is struggling with the bat this season and averages just above 22.
George Bartlett will come at number three. Bartlett has 187 runs with two half-centuries this season. Saif Zaib will play a crucial role in the middle with Lewis McManus & James Sales. Zaib has played the role of an anchor this season scoring 230 runs at an average of 38.33. But Lewis McManus & James Sales have added just 113 runs in 6 games this season. Zaib has been outstanding with the ball too. The all-rounder has 9 wickets at an economy of 5.15.
Justin Broad will lead the bowling unit with Jack White. Broad is Northamptonshire’s leading wicket-taker with 9 wickets at an average of 17.55. On the other hand, White who has played just 4 games has 6 wickets for every 15 runs he has given this season. No other bowler has been impactful from the hosts and probably the reason for their downfall.

No one from Lancashire would have imagined them losing all their games this season. But that’s the truth. Skipper Josh Bohannon has no idea what is happening. He might need to go to ex-skipper Keaton Jennings to figure things out. Keshana Fonseka will open the innings with George Bell. Bell has scored 100 runs in 6 innings. Fonseka who played his first game in Lancashire’s last outing scored 42 runs. Bohannon will come at number three. He is their leading run-scorer with 187 runs in 6 innings.
Keaton Jennings might be back in the squad after missing their last games. Jennings played one innings this season where he scored 151 runs. He was the player of the match for Lancashire in their last match against Northamptonshire in 2022. Rocky Flintoff, Venkatesh Iyer, and Chris Green will play in the middle. Green has 183 runs in 5 innings including a century. He is scoring more than a run per ball this season. Iyer might get replaced if Jennings gets fit.
The bowling has been very poor for Lancashire this season. They have tried 14 bowlers. But what if we tell you that their leading wicket-taker has just 4 wickets. And yes, its Chris Green again. If your all-rounder has more wickets than your main bowlers, you know what went wrong this season.
Key Players: Josh Bohannon, Chris Green, Rocky Flintoff.
