Defending champions England are one of the most fancied teams in the 2023 ICC World Cup. However, the start to their defense has been rather insipid. England were totally outplayed by New Zealand in their very first game of the tournament. That loss would have hurt them and shook them up. Make no mistake, this robust English side is still one of the red-hot favorites of this World Cup, and they will be hurting. England’s next challenge is against Bangladesh, a side that has had success against them in the ODI World Cup. More importantly, the Bangla Tigers have started their campaign with a convincing win and will come hard at England.

England’s start to the ODI World Cup was shockingly insipid. In their first match against New Zealand at Ahmedabad, England managed to post just 282-9 on a flat track. The Kiwis faced no trouble in the chase and polished off the target with almost 14 overs and 9 wickets remaining.
That one loss doesn’t suddenly make England a bad team. They had an off day, and we feel they will make a strong comeback in the tournament with this game itself.
Keep an eye out for Dawid Malan. The left-handed opener has collected 416 runs from his last 7 matches at an average of almost 70. Moreover, he averages 62.50 against Bangladesh in ODIs, and should be able to negate their spin threat.
Jos Buttler will always be a threat. He is one of the most dangerous middle-order batters in the world and has been in form, scoring 330 runs in his last 8 matches at an average of 41.25 and a strike rate of 114.58.
Ben Stokes, who missed the first match due to a niggle, could return for this game. If he does, he will provide the middle order with a lot more stability.
Liam Livingstone can tonk the spinners with ease out of the ground, and his hitting prowess will prove to be more than handy against Bangladesh’s battery of spin bowlers.
Its England’s bowling that appears to lack that X-factor this time. Adil Rashid, of course, is their go-to spin bowler, and we expect him to do well in this game. This pitch, though, should assist England’s pacers a lot more than the one in Ahmedabad. Chris Woakes and Mark Wood can make life difficult for the Bangladeshi top order.

Bangladesh have made a near-perfect start to their 2023 ODI World Cup campaign. They defeated Afghanistan comprehensively at Dharamsala after bowling them out for just 156 and then chasing the target inside 35 overs with 6 wickets in hand.
It was Bangladesh’s spinners who proved to be the match-winners, with captain Shakib Al Hasan and Mehidy Hasan Miraz both picking up 3 wickets each at really good economy rates. Left-arm seamer Shoriful Islam’s 2-34 too proved to be useful.
It won’t be easy for England’s batters to get away against Bangladesh’s spinners on this surface. They have gotten used to the conditions and will have a few tricks up their sleeves. Then there is fast bowler Taskin Ahmed (12 wickets from the last 6 matches), who will get considerable bounce and movement from this surface.
In the batting department, the Tigers will rely on Najmul Hossain Shanto to deliver again. He has been their most in-form batter in recent months, having made 339 runs in his last 5 matches at an average of 84.75. In the last game too, he top-scored for the team with a well-made, unbeaten 59 off 83 balls.
Another batter to watch out for is Mehidy Hasan Miraz. The all-rounder is growing in confidence with every game and smashed a vital 57 in the chase against Afghanistan.
The experienced Shakib might have a role to play with the bat too in this game if there is a top-order collapse. The last time these two sides had met in the ODI World Cup, Shakib had led the charge with an outstanding 121.

The pitch at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium is one of the few ones in the country that provides consistent help to seam bowlers. There is bounce and movement throughout, and the ball will zip off the surface when it’s new. Spinners too will enjoy the bounce from the pitch, as we saw in the last game. Batting won’t be easy, but once batters get their eye in, they can make a big score.
The weather in Dharamsala will be partly sunny with a possible shower in the afternoon.
The average first innings score at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium is 204. It’s not exactly a high-scoring venue, and teams batting first have been bundled out for less than 200 thrice here in just five completed games. The team batting first should look to set a target of around 260-270 runs.
Teams batting second have won four out of the five games played at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium, including the previous game played here in the tournament between Bangladesh and Afghanistan. It’s almost certain that the toss-winning team in this match will look to field first.
Bangladesh and England have met four times in ICC ODI World Cup matches; Bangladesh has won two of these four games, while England has triumphed on two occasions. In ODIs overall, England has a 19-5 head-to-head record against Bangladesh. One thing is for certain: England are unlikely to bulldoze their way through Bangladesh in this match. They have already gotten a sense of the conditions, and their bowlers will surely create some troubles for England’s batters. However, we reckon England’s seam bowling unit will deliver a better performance, aided by the pitch. The likely return of Ben Stokes will bolster them too. Bangladesh can run England mighty close and might end up surprising them too. But the overall balance and strength of the two squads suggest that England should dominate this contest.
Back England as the winners of this face-off.
